THE STACK

Howard The Duck #1, Marvel Comics

Written by Chip Zdarsky, Art by Joe Quinones

THE STORY: We're brought in post-Nexus of All Realities, leaving us with a very frustrated Howard who keeps having run-ins with the law. The timing's perfect as he befriends fellow hoodlum and badass babe Tara. Howard's trying to strike it out as a detective. After very little action, Howard finally lands a case from a customer that saw him "in a movie" (heyo!). He's tasked in bringing back a necklace, stolen by Black Cat, of all people. Howard and Tara team up to snag the priceless artifact, only to be duck-nabbed by The Gatherer, The Collector's bounty hunter of sorts. We end the issue with Howard and other "collectable species" in The Collector's holding cells. But Howard's in good company, as Rocket Raccoon is also locked up and quickly forming a plan to bust out!

THE GOOD: Holy cameos, Batm-erm, Spider-Man! Like we mentioned before, Black Cat's in this, which mean Spider-Man's not far behind. Rocket, She-Hulk... this series seems like we're gonna see a ton of familiar faces, as Howard The Duck doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. The writing is incredibly funny. We salute Zdarsky for his comedic chops. There's tons of duck-tactic puns that quacked us up. Great artwork by Quinones. The book alone is fun to just stare at. Finally, this is the first Marvel comic we were tempted enough to download the Marvel AR Reader, to which we were treated to a hilarious can't-miss clip.

THE BAD: Text boxes and bubbles sometimes overpower the art. Takes awhile to develop its tone. Many vague Marvel references that will fly over casuals' heads.
